Personalized PRP Therapy for Female Hair Loss in Katy & Houston – A Case Study
Hair thinning is one of the most emotionally distressing concerns our patients face—especially when it’s gradual, persistent, and doesn’t respond to over-the-counter options. At Reena Jogi Dermatology, serving Katy and Houston, we see many women dealing with androgenetic alopecia, also known as female pattern hair loss. In this blog post, we’re sharing the story of a 45-year-old new patient who began her journey to healthier hair with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, enhanced by the Zimmer cooling system for comfort.
Case Overview: 2 Years of Hair Thinning
Our patient, a 45-year-old woman, came to us with a two-year history of diffuse, moderate hair loss over her scalp. She had been using Nutrafol supplements and was on hormone replacement therapy (estradiol patch, progesterone, and testosterone cream), but hadn’t yet explored prescription treatments or procedures.
Her scalp exam and positive hair pull test suggested androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Using a dermatoscope during the visit helped further support the diagnosis. We discussed the option of a scalp biopsy to confirm the condition, but she was ready to begin treatment right away.
What Is Androgenetic Alopecia?
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss in both men and women. In women, it often shows up as a widening part and diffuse thinning rather than bald patches. While DHT (dihydrotestosterone) plays a role, it’s not the only factor involved. As we explain in our blog, "Is Androgenetic Alopecia Caused Only by the Effects of DHT?", hormonal changes, genetics, inflammation, and environmental stressors can all contribute.

Treatment Options Discussed
We reviewed several options with our patient, including:
Topical minoxidil (Read: "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly About Minoxidil")
Oral medications such as spironolactone or finasteride
Supplements (Viviscal, Nutrafol, Votesse)
After an in-depth discussion of benefits, risks, and out-of-pocket costs, our patient chose to proceed with PRP therapy—a non-surgical option using her own blood to stimulate hair growth.
What Is PRP Hair Restoration?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a regenerative treatment where a small amount of your blood is drawn, spun in a centrifuge to separate platelets, and injected into the scalp. These platelets contain growth factors that may improve hair density and slow hair loss by encouraging the hair follicle cycle to reset and grow. Reducing Discomfort with Zimmer Cooling
PRP injections can be uncomfortable, especially over sensitive areas of the scalp. That’s where the Zimmer device comes in. Zimmer is a medical-grade cold air system that blows a steady stream of chilled air directly onto the scalp during the procedure. It numbs the skin naturally and helps patients tolerate the multiple small injections needed across the scalp. This results in:
Less discomfort during the procedure
No need for injectable numbing agents
A quicker recovery with minimal downtime
Our patient tolerated the treatment very well with the help of Zimmer cooling and required no breaks during her session.
What to Expect After PRP
After the injection of 7 cc of PRP, we advised the patient to:
Wash her hair the next day with a sulfate-free shampoo
Avoid hair dye for 2–3 days
Continue her Nutrafol supplements
Start or maintain any prescribed topical or oral treatments
We scheduled her second PRP session for one month later. PRP typically works best in a series of three monthly treatments, followed by maintenance sessions every few months.
