Combating Male Pattern Hair Loss with PRP and Minoxidil

Written by Dr. Reena Jogi

Hair loss can be a distressing experience, especially when it begins early. At Village Dermatology, we frequently treat young men with androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern hair loss. Today we’re sharing the story of a 27-year-old patient who returned to our clinic for follow-up after beginning a combination treatment plan for his hair loss, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections and oral minoxidil.

This patient had previously undergone PRP therapy at our clinic in September 2024. At his current visit, he continued to show signs of diffuse, non-scarring patterned hair loss typical of androgenetic alopecia, primarily affecting the vertex and frontotemporal regions. Using a dermatoscope, we confirmed stable hair density with no signs of scarring, a positive indication for ongoing therapeutic options.

We performed his ninth PRP treatment—a procedure in which we draw the patient’s own blood, separate the platelet-rich plasma, and inject it back into the scalp to stimulate hair follicle activity and growth. He tolerated the procedure well and was instructed to continue proper post-treatment care, including avoiding hair dye for several days and using sulfate-free shampoos.

In addition to PRP, the patient is now taking oral minoxidil, a powerful option for those not responding to topical formulations. We reviewed the potential side effects, such as unwanted hair growth, swelling, or dizziness, and emphasized regular follow-up for safety and results monitoring.

For patients like him, we often also recommend supplements such as Votesse, Nutrafol, or Viviscal to support hair health from the inside out.

If you're experiencing hair thinning or loss, schedule a consultation to learn if PRP or other treatments may be right for you. Our goal is to empower you to feel confident in your hair and yourself.
